In spring animals make their first steps outside. A Black Woodpecker is feeding its chicks. Here, a northern fox and a herd of Yezo Shika deer. It is important to think about how it’s possible to preserve their habitat and rethink the relationship with the wild.
Endangered brown bears also live here. The estimated number of brown bears in Shiretoko is put at over one hundred. Hunters killed the bears during the time of the Meiji government and their number greatly decreased. Shiretoko is the only place in Japan with a brown bear population.
