In Denmark wind energy is not just an environmentalist issue. The 5600 wind turbines distributed throughout the country and offshore are tangible proof of the success of an entire industrial sector which came into being just twenty years ago. Today the two leading Danish wind turbine manufacturers hold 40% of the world market. But although Denmark was the forerunner in this area, this success has now been extended to the entire European Union which holds 90% of the global market. The origin of this success: the political commitment of the Member States of the European Union to promote green electricity, both to diversify sources of energy supply and to combat climate degradation.
